Students will take midterms on Tuesday, December 13, at 8:00 am.

Students in first period PBS will take their midterms on Monday, December 12 at 8:00 am.  Students in third period PS will take their midterms on Thursday, December 15 at 8:00 am.

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


Students will begin studying biochemistry used in biotechnology by learning about proteins.  We will build models of proteins.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

Students will begin Chapter 16 on Questioned Documents. Two writing activities will be performed this week.
PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will begin new unit on Diabetes and Nutrition this week.  They will work in groups to look at food labels and determine what we are eating.


MEDICAL PROJECTS

Students will job shadow on Monday and Thursday.  This is the last week of the first rotation.

Students will take a test on Chapter 4 on Tuesday.  When they finish the test, they should read Chapter 5 in the Biotechnology textbook.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  See you after the holidays.

Students will take the test on Tire Tracks and Tire Impressions on Tuesday.  When they finish the test, they should read Chapter 16 on Questioned Documents.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.  See you after the holidays.

Week of November 14, 2011

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


We will continue studying DNA during this week. We will learn how to make agarose gels on Tuesday in the lab.  Friday will be a test review on Chapter 4 and test will be Tuesday of next week (11/22/11).  Experimental team will travel to A&M during 4th period on Monday. 


FORENSIC SCIENCE

Finish notes on tire tracks and impressions.  Review for test on Friday.  Test will be Tuesday of next week (11/22/11).

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Return lab books and go over labs.  Lab to look at prepared blood slides under the microscopes and check blood pressure with Vernier LabQuest on Monday.  Continue notes on blood on Wednesday.  Test review on Unit Two on Thursday.  Test will be Monday of next week (11/21/11).

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 7, 2011

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


We will continue studying DNA during this week. We will cover some techniques used in the laboratory to study DNA and recombinant DNA.  Wednesday, all sophomore students will take the PLAN test.  Report to the auditorium at 7:45 am.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

Lab reports on firearms and ballistics will be graded and return as will the test on Firearms. We will begin the study of tire impressions this week.


PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will turn in their labs performed with Vernier Lab Quest equipment this week. We will begin the study of blood and its components this week.


MEDICAL PROJECTS

Students will continue their job shadowing this week. They will job shadow every Monday and Thursday either at Huntsville Hospital or at a private offices.

Students will turn in their drawings of the heart and will perform EKG lab with Vernier Lab Quest equipment this week.

Students will continue their job shadowing this week. They will job shadow every Monday and Thursday either at Huntsville Hospital or at a private offices.

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


We will continue studying different types of solution concentrations including percent solutions, molarity and normality.  Students will finish measurement lab and work with solutions in the lab


FORENSIC SCIENCE

The lab write up for the fingerprint lab is due Tuesday.  We will begin notes on tool marks and shoe impressions.  Shoe impression lab on Friday.

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will continue working on materials covering the cardiovascular system.  Students will build a model of a pump in group activity.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 3

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


Students will finish writing up the transformation lab with pictures of the electrophoresis.  We will cover the different types of solution concentrations including percent solutions, molarity and normality.

Students will take test on fingerprints on Tuesday as well get results of super glue fuming development of fingerprints.  The lab write up for the fingerprint lab is due after fall break.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 26

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


Students will practice using micropipets on Tuesday to load electrophoresis gels.  Wednesday, a group of scientists will visit from Hudson Alpha Institute to perform a transformation lab with the students.  Students should dress appropriate - no opened toed shoes.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will continue the unit on Fingerprints this week. Students will learn to develop latent fingerprints this week as well as prepare ten prints of their own fingerprints.

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will take test on the first unit on Monday.  We will begin the second unit on the cardiovascular system on Thursday of this week.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 19, 2011

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


Some students will be taking the Math portion of the AHSGE on Tuesday (about half the class). We will perform measuring lab on Friday, September 23, 2011.  The pre-lab write up must be finished when you come to class on Friday or you will not be able to go to lab.  Dress appropriate - no opened toed shoes.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will begin the unit on Fingerprints this week.  We will look at fingerprints in a couple of in class activities this week.  We will prepare for chemical processing lab for fingerprints that will be performed next week.


PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will finish their autopsy evidence study on Monday and present to the class on Wednesday. We will finalize the first unit this week and prepare for test on this unit to be given next week.


MEDICAL PROJECTS

Preparations for job shadowing will continue -- Students will go to Hospital Security office on Wednesday to have hospital badges made.  Last minute preparations will continue this week as job shadowing will begin next Monday.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12, 2011

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY

Students will begin learning basic measuring skills and other lab procedures for biotechnology labs. We will begin measuring lab on Tuesday.  Dr. Neil Lamb will be our guest speaker on Friday, September 16.  He will speak on genetic transformation.

FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will continue looking at different types of evidence (Chapter Three) this week.  There will be a test review for Chapters Two and Three on Wednesday, September 14 and test on those chapters on Friday, September 16.

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will turn in their concept maps of the skeletal system on Monday.  We will discuss interconnectivity of body systems and the students will make concept maps of how two systems work together.


MEDICAL PROJECTS

Preparations for job shadowing will continue -- review of HIPPA Law and Hospital codes will be covered. Hospital Safety Handbooks will be reviewed. Schedule of job shadowing assignments will be finalized.  Badge request forms will be faxed to Hospital Security.

INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY


Test on Chapter Two on Tuesday.  Students will begin learning basic measuring skills and other lab procedures for biotechnology labs.  This will be a four day school week because of the Labor Day Holiday.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will continue unit two which covers processing the crime scene. The Crime Scene Sketch lab is due on Tuesday.  We will search for evidence in an outdoor crime scene this week.


PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will finish the body system packet this week.  They will work on a flow chart of the skeletal system. We will then begin looking at the interconnectivity of the different body systems.


MEDICAL PROJECTS

Preparations for job shadowing will continue -- review of HIPPA Law and Hospital codes will be covered. Hospital Safety Handbooks will be reviewed.  Schedule of job shadowing assignments will be given to students.

Students will present their models of body systems on Monday.  We will then begin looking at the interconnectivity of the different body systems.

WEEK OF AUGUST 22, 2011


INTRODUCTION TO BIOTECHNOLOGY

We will have a guest speaker on Tuesday.  Mr. Kendal Birdwell, a graduate of NCTHS, is a paramedic with the Huntsville Bomb Squad and will speak to the students about his career.  This is a topic for both Biotechnology and Principles of Biomedical Science.  Biotechnology students will have a test on Chapter One on Friday.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

Students will take test on Chapter One on Tuesday.  We will begin unit two which covers processing the crime scene after the test.

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will begin continue looking at clues to the woman's death. This week will focus on the many body systems that may be involved in the women's death. Career journals are due on Thursday for EMT, Coroner and 911 Operator.  These students also will hear guest speaker on Tuesday morning while in Biotech class.

MEDICAL PROJECTS

Students essays on the ethics of genetically engineering and giving birth to a donor child to help save the life of an older sibling are due Monday. Preparations for job shadowing will continue -- review of HIPPA Law and Hospital codes will be covered.

Students will take lab safety test first part of the week.  We will discuss careers, lab practices and ethics in biotechnology this week.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

Students will take safety test the first of the week.  History and terms used in crime scene investigation will be discussed in class this week.

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Students will begin working on the mystery of the women found dead in her apartment.  This week will focus on the many body systems that may  be involved in the women's death.  This is a study of the body systems in general.

MEDICAL PROJECTS

Students will be discussing the ethics of genetically engineering and giving birth to a donor child to help save the life of an older sibling.  The discussions will be based around the video "My Sister's Keeper".


HOMEROOM

Students will test on the Serology unit on Tuesday and we will begin the Unit on Forensic DNA testing on Friday.

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

We will finish the unit on Diabetes this week and test on Thursday. Our next unit will be on Sickle Cell Anemia.


HUMAN BIOCHEMISTRY

We will continue working on carboxylic acids and their deriviatives. We will hopefully get into the lab again this week and perform oxidation studies with aldehydes and ketones.

Students will give presentations on Scientists in Genetic History.  We will work through unit on taxonomy.  AHSGE will be given this week.

FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will continue the unit on forensic serology and blood spatter. Blood spatter lab on Tuesday and ABO Blood Lab on Friday.

PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Unit Three on Diabetes will continue this week. We will also look at how enzymes help the chemical reactions to take place within our bodies.


HUMAN BIOCHEMISTRY

The students will cover materials on aldehydes and ketones this week. We will hopefully get into the lab again this week and perform oxidation studies with aldehydes and ketones.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 21,2011

PRE-AP HONORS BIOLOGY

We will test on  DNA including the structure, function, replication, transcription and translation process. After the test on Monday, we will .


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will begin the unit on forensic serology and blood spatter.  Thursday, February 24, we will take a field trip to the Space and Rocket Center's CSI exhibit.


PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Unit Three on Diabetes will continue this week. We will study the energy found in the food we eat and how to measure that energy. The students will finish the lab on energy.  We will also look at how enzymes help the chemical reactions to take place within our bodies.



HUMAN BIOCHEMISTRY

The students will cover materials on aldehydes and ketones this week.  We will hopefully get into the lab again this week and perform oxidation studies with aldehydes and ketones.



MEDICAL PROJECTS

Job shadowing continues this week. Students will job shadow on Monday and Thursday. The shadowing positions will continue from the second rotation begun the first of December.

Week of February 14

PRE-AP HONORS BIOLOGY


We will begin the unit on DNA including the structure, function, replication, transcription and translation process.  This unit will include lecture, interactive internet sites, and group activities.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will have the test on forensic anthropology on Tuesday and begin the unit on Forensic Serology after working through the FACES lab on Friday. The FACES lab is an interactive police artist facial recognition activity.


PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Unit Three on Diabetes will continue this week. We will study the energy found in the food we eat and how to measure that energy. We will also look at how enzymes help the chemical reactions to take place within our bodies.

HUMAN BIOCHEMISTRY

Tuesday we will have a test on amines and will start the unit on aldehydes and ketones.  We will complete the lab on amines and discuss the possible errors encountered in the lab this past week.

MEDICAL PROJECTS

Job shadowing continues this week. Students will job shadow on Monday and Thursday. The shadowing positions will continue from the second rotation begun the first of December.  Wednesday the students will share their experiences with the group.

WEEK OF JANUARY 24, 2011


PRE-AP HONORS BIOLOGY

We will finish the unit on cellular reproduction including mitosis and meiosis this fourth week.  We will test on the unit on Wednesday and begin the chapter on Mendelian genetics.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will have the test on odontology on Tuesday and begin the unit on Forensic Anthropology on Wednesday.   We will be looking at different homonid skulls as well as the differences between male and female skulls and long bones.


PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Unit Three on Diabetes will continue this week. We will study the energy found in the food we eat and how to measure that energy. We will look at how the food we eat influences our metabolic activity.


HUMAN BIOCHEMISTRY

Tuesday we will review alcohols, ethers and thiols and test on Wednesday. We will then look at chirality or handedness of organic molecules by using the chemical models.


MEDICAL PROJECTS

Job shadowing continues this week. Students will job shadow on Thursday. The shadowing positions will continue from the second rotation begun the first of December.

WEEK OF JANUARY 17, 2011

PRE-APHONORS BIOLOGY

We will continue to study cellular reproduction including mitosis and meiosis this third week back to school. We will use the computer lab to look at interactive mitosis and meiosis sites.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will continue studying odontology. Forensic Odontology is the study of teeth impressions, castings, bite marks and dental records as they pertain to criminal and malpractice investigations. Thursday of this week we will go to the lab and do teeth impressions/castings.

WEEK OF JANUARY 3, 2011

Welcome Back Students!!! Lets make this a fun and interesting New Year of learning.




HONORS BIOLOGY PRE-AP

We will study cellular reproduction to include mitosis and meiosis this first week back to school. A group activity will be scheduled to look at karyotypes and the information they can tell a scientist or medical professional.


FORENSIC SCIENCE

We will begin the new year by studying and casting teeth impressions.  This is the beginning of the unit on Forensic Odontology.  Forensic Odontology is the study of teeth impressions, castings, bite marks and dental records as they pertain to criminal and malpractice investigations.



PRINCIPLES OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Unit Three on Diabetes will continue this week. We will study the energy found in the food we eat and how to measure that energy.  We will look at how the food we eat influences our metabolic activity.
